She’s Not “A Natural”
“Well, she’s just a natural.”
You may have found yourself having that thought as you look at the people around you that seem to have it all together. Whether it be those with great health and fitness or the gal at work that seems to be the most productive and organized, all while having the latest and greatest ideas.
For years, I thought that I just didn’t have “it” in me: “it” being the ability to create the momentum that it took to change the course of my life and my habits. I truly believed in the old saying of “you either got it or you don’t” and I applied it to every area of my life. I no longer feel this way, and I’m going to share with you why it might be time for you to shed this limiting belief for yourself, as well.
First off, let’s talk about this idea of “the natural”. As tempting as it may be to throw around that label, the fact is this: there are very few people out there that are just true “naturals”.
What can appear to be a “natural gift” is most often the result of someone whom has practiced a skill in order to improve. These people have utilized setbacks as opportunities for feedback along the way in order to become amazing at what they do. The skills that used to require a lot of thought and energy have now become habits that are practiced daily and now no longer demand the mental load that they once did. Experts and “naturals” didn’t become this way overnight. They put in the work with tiny bite-sized routines and practices that felt achievable for them along the way. These routines and practices eventually became something outstanding.
Now, I’ll share with you my number one rule of wellness: find things that add joy to your life and make sense for where you are right now. Please don’t misunderstand what I am trying to say, thinking that you should adopt every habit and routine of the girl that you think you want to be just like and just put it on repeat until you can’t do it anymore. That will only take you back to where you started. But, I digress.
As we inch ourselves towards the end of another year, and gear up for a fresh start and new growth, I want for you to keep this idea of the natural at the front of your brain. Before you even begin to allow your mind to tell you that this wellness stuff “just doesn’t come naturally to you”, remind yourself that there was once a time that it didn’t come so easily for that “natural” that you have convinced yourself that you could never be like.
I hope you all are enjoying a slow holiday weekend with your family.
See you soon friends.
